A machine (1) mobile on a track is equipped with a ballast clearing device (2), having inner and outer clearing members (12,13), for clearing a sleeper bed (5), exposed after removal of an old sleeper (4), of a track (6). The inner clearing member (12) is designed for pivoting by means of a pivot drive (14) about a pivot axis (15), extending in the longitudinal direction of the machine, for clearing an area located between rails (9) of the track (6). The outer clearing member (13) is vertically adjustable independently of the inner clearing member (12) by means of a separate vertical adjustment drive (26). With this, ballast (3) which has been shifted by the inner clearing memb er (12) in the direction towards the respective field side (35) of a rail (9) c an be received by the outer clearing member (13) for further clearing in the direction towards a ballast bed shoulder (33).
