Liquid fuel contaminated with water is treated to inhibit the formation of ice therein at reduced temperatures by bringing it into contact with one or more aggregates of a solid substance, which is substantially insoluble in the fuel but soluble in water at ordinary atmospheric temperatures, under such conditions that a saturated aqueous solution of the solid substance is formed, this saturated solution being one which will not precipitate a substantial amount of solid or freeze when cooled to a temperature of -50 DEG C. The liquid fuel is one for use in burners, internal combustion engines, internal combustion turbines or jet engines and may be of petroleum origin. Suitable solids are chromium trioxide or mixtures thereof with anhydrous ferric chloride, anhydrous calcium chloride or anhydrous zinc chloride, but p according to the Provisional Specification these anhydrous chlorides may be employed alone. The aggregates may be disposed in a storage tank or, alternatively, the fuel may be caused to flow over the aggregates, for example on the way to the burner or engine.
