The invention relates to new crystalline forms I and II of (R-(R*,R*))-2-(4-fluoro-phenyl)-beta,delta-dihydroxy-5-(1 methylethyl)phenyl-4-((phenylamino)carbonyl)-1H-pyrrole-1 heptanoic acid tertiary butyl ester and a process for the preparation thereof. The new polymorphs of the present invention are useful pharmaceutical intermediates for the preparation of any and highly pure form of atorvastatin, e.g. atorvastatin free acid, atorvastatin lactone, or any pharmaceutically acceptable salt of atorvastatine, in any of its polymorphic or amorphous forms.
