Disclosed is a biodegradable 2-stroke engine lubricant ester basestock composition comprising: (a) between 40-60 % by weight of polyneopentyl polyol esters, (b) between 15-35 % by weight of a dicarboxcylic acid ester coupling agent formed by reacting a dicarboxcylic acid having 18-36 carbon atoms with a linear or branched chain monoalcohol having 6-14 carbon atoms, the coupling agent promoting the compatibility of the finished ester basestock with traditional 2-stroke lubricant additives, and (c) the balance of at least one additional ester for adjusting the physical properties of the lubricant, selected from the group consisting of: - (1) polyol esters of linear and/or branched monocarboxcylic acids, - (2) dicarboxyclic acid esters of dicarboxcylic acids having from 5-12 carbon atoms and linear and/or branched monoalcohols, - (3) linear and/or branched monocarboxcylic acid esters of linear and/or branched monoalcohols, and - (4) mixtures thereof, wherein the weight percentages are based on the total weight of esters in the basestock.
