A process and apparatus that allow high speed mass production of concrete blocks suitable for landscaping applications are disclosed. The produced block includes converging side walls, an integral flange extending below the lower face of the block, and a patterned front face that simulates natural stone. The process includes the steps of providing a mould cavity with an open top and an open bottom, positioning a flat surface of a pallet underneath the mould to temporarily close the bottom of the mould cavity, introducing dry cast concrete into the mould cavity through the open mould top, compacting the dry cast concrete to form a pre-cured concrete block with the rear face of the block resting on the pallet and the front face of the block facing upward, reopening the temporarily-closed bottom of the mould cavity, discharging the pre-cured concrete block from the mould cavity through the reopened bottom of the mould cavity and curing the pre-cured concrete block. A stripper shoe imprinted with a three-dimensional pattern can also be introduced to the top of the mould cavity during compaction, in order to form the patterned face on the block.
