<p>672,477. Carbonization or gasification of solid carbonaceous materials. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. June 15, 1950 [June 20, 1949], No. 14977/50. Addition to 654,686. Class 55 (i). In a fluidized process for the carbonization or gasification of plasticizing carbonaceous solids, hot non-plasticizing solids are mixed with the solids to be carbonized or gasified, e.g. coal or lignite, in a mixing and pre-heating zone by injecting a stream of the plasticizing solids into a stream of the non-plasticizing solids. The plasticizing solids are fed from a hopper 1 to the nozzle 16 of an injector 15, while non-plasticizing solids consisting of the residue from a heater 40 are also fed to the injector via a line 42, the mixture being injected into an elongated zone 10 and finally passing into a carbonization or gasification zone 20. The injector nozzle 16 is jacketed and a cooling liquid circulated therethrough. The weight ratio between non- plasticizing and plasticizing solids is at least 4 to 1 and temperatures are maintained of 900-1200‹ F. in the heater and 800-1000‹ F. and 1300-1700‹ F. in the zone 20 for carbonization and gasification respectively, partial combustion of the solids in the zone 20 being used, if necessary, to keep the desired reaction temperature. Gaseous products from the zone 20 are withdrawn through the line 25 and solid residue not circulated for combustion in the heater 40 is rejected from the system through the line 31. A waste-heat boiler 49 may be provided in the line 47 to recover heat from the flue gases leaving the heater 40. In a modification the heater 40 is omitted, partial combustion of the solids in the zone 20 supplying all the heat required for the process and hot residue from the zone 20 is fed as the non- plasticizing solid to the injector 15.</p> |
