The band (4) on which the material is deposited is made of a flat sheet of flexible material (2). A dosing machine may accurately position small piles of granular material (1) on the first half of the band (4.1) on one side of the centerline (4.3). The band is then folded over along the centerline so that the second half of the band (4.2) covers the first half with the piles of material. Transverse welds (5) are formed between each pile of material, and a longitudinal weld (6) joins the two edges of the band together. The transverse welds are arranged in pairs and transverse cuts (7) are made between adjacent welds to separate individual packets of material (3).
