PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of preventing an image from being deteriorated due to saturation of electric charges resulting from maximally received light. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is provided in which a light source inverter 15 supplies a drive current to a cold cathode tube 16 as a light source of illuminating the original via a switch 17 to glow the cold cathode tube 16, the light from the cold cathode tube 16 is reflected in the original and a CCD sensor 18 receives the reflected light for reading the image of the original. In the image reading apparatus, the switch 17 is turned ON / OFF for a reading period by a command from an MPU 1 to intermittently glow the cold cathode tube 16 thereby suppressing an amount of light received by the CCD sensor 18 and reducing saturation of the electric charges.
