PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a catalyst composition for hydrotreating hydrocarbon oil, which is used for hydrotreatment of hydrocarbon oil containing metallic compounds such as vanadium and nickel in large quantities and which has both high demetalization and desulfurization activities, and to provide a method for hydrotreating hydrocarbon oil using such catalyst composition. SOLUTION: The catalyst composition for hydrotreating hydrocarbon oil contains a particulate manganese compound in the catalyst composition comprising a hydrogenation-activating metallic component carried by a carrier.
