The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for producing sound effects in a musical instrument that produces acoustic sound, such as a stringed instrument, where the sound produced by the instrument is led to a sound processing unit (6), the sound is modified by means of one or more sound effects, and the sound is led further to at least an amplifier (3). In the solution according to the invention the position of a hand-actuated sound effects means, such as a vibrato arm (4), is monitored and, based on the change in said position, the sound produced by the instrument is modified by means of one or more sound effects according to the position of the vibrato arm (4).
