PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display apparatus which attenuates a false contour of a moving picture signal and minimizes a flicker. SOLUTION: The display apparatus to receive a picture signal containing image information and to process the picture signal in units of at least one area distinguishing an image includes a motion detection section to detect whether there is a motion in the area from the picture signal, a hysteresis calculation section to calculate hysteresis information regarding the detection result of the motion detection section up to a current frame by areas, a moving picture detection section to detect whether a picture signal of the area in the picture signal is a moving picture signal or a still picture signal on the basis of the hysteresis information, and a gradation level conversion section to convert the picture signal corresponding to the area into either a group of gradation levels for a moving picture to display the moving picture signal or a group of gradation levels for a still picture to display the still picture signal according to a detection result of the moving picture detection section.
