<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a forward/backward movement switching mechanism for a toroidal type continuously variable transmission capable of reducing engagement shock generated on frictional engagement elements under normal temperature, preventing the slipping of a frictional roller by relieving engagement shock even under very low temperature where the fluid lubrication is not sufficiently performed, and protecting a torque transmission face. <P>SOLUTION: In this forward/backward movement switching mechanism mounted in series with the toroidal type continuously variable transmission for switching the forward/backward motion by engaging/disengaging the frictional engagement elements, and the forward/backward switching mechanism has first and second frictional elements connected with at least input and output-side rotating elements of the forward/backward switching mechanism, a piston for engaging the first and second frictional elements by pressing them, and two sheets of dish plates respectively mounted between the piston and the first and second frictional elements.
