[Also in Group XXVI] A mounting for machines having out-ofbalance rotating or oscillating members and normally operating at constant speed comprises a support mounted on a float system which has a natural period of oscillation substantially different from the period of the up-and-down component of the outof-balance forces produced. As shown applied to a windmill generating set a rotatable tower 14 carrying the windmill 17 and. generator 12 at its top is supported on an annular float system 28 in reservoir 11 surrounding a rigid structure 10. A certain amount of up - and-down movement together with rotation is allowed whilst lateral movement is prevented by rollers 61 rotatably supported at the base of structure 10 and engaging a race ring 62 of the tower 14, and a guide race 34 resiliently connected by links 37 to the tower engaging a hollow spindle 29 secured to the top of the structure 10. Cables 63 are taken from slip rings on the spindle 29 which pick up the current from generator 12. The annular float system 28 may be made up of a number of separate floats joined together and communicating through adjustable openings and each float may be fitted with a cock for introducing or withdrawing liquid to vary the buoyancy of the floats and so adjust the natural period of vibration of the system. |
