A brain ischemia monitor comprising a pair of optical fibers each having a fore end part which can be arranged generally perpendicularly to the outer surface of a brain, a section connected with the root end part of one optical fiber and irradiating the outer surface of the brain with UV-rays through the one optical fiber, a light receiving section connected with the root end part of the other optical fiber and receiving fluorescence emitted from brain cells excited with UV-rays through that optical fiber, and a display capable of displaying the intensity of the fluorescence.
