PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always precisely determine a recorded area and an unrecorded area of a recording type optical disk. SOLUTION: It is checked whether the optimization using an HL ratio of an on-track signal is completed within an effective range. When the optimization is completed within the effective range, the optimization is completed by determining that a pickup is present in the recorded area. When the optimization is not completed within the effective range, it is determined that it is present in the unrecorded area and that the optimization is not correctly performed, and the pickup is moved so that the optimization of the on-track signal is performed again. Accordingly, the adjustment of a reference value for generating the on-track signal in the recorded area can be precisely performed.
