PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable magnification lens system which can be constituted to a shorter depth and smaller size than the conventional lens and can be changed over to two focal lengths and to provide an imaging apparatus using the variable magnification lens system. SOLUTION: The variable magnification lens system is constituted by arraying, successively from an object side, a first lens group W 1 having negative refracting power, a fixed optical member P for bending an optical path by reflection of a prism etc., a second lens group W 2 having positive refracting power, and an imaging lens system L. An afocal system of <1 in angular magnification is constituted by the first lens group, the optical member and the second lens group. The variable magnification lens system 1 makes the first lens group and the second lens group simultaneously movable in a direction nearly orthogonal with their optical axes and changes the focal length of the entire system by changing over the positions of the first lens group and the second lens group to a position where the optical axes are aligned to the optical axis of the imaging lens system and a position where the lens groups retreat so as to deviate from the optical path of the imaging lens system.
