PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of color unevenness and blurring of an image occurring when a delivery roller is descended and collided with a paper feeding tray in a color reading mode and a high-resolution reading mode. SOLUTION: The automatic manuscript feeder is provided with the paper feeding tray 20 on which manuscripts are laid, the freely ascendable/descendable delivery roller 32 for feeding the manuscripts by being brought into contact with the uppermost manuscript on the paper feeding tray 20, a paper feeding roller 33 and a separation member 34 by which the manuscripts fed by the delivery roller 32 are fed after separating them one by one, a driving motor MT1 for ascending/descending the delivery roller 32, and a control unit 70 for controlling the driving motor MT1. The control unit 70 controls the driving motor MT1 so as to properly make the contacting speed of the delivery roller 32 with the manuscripts on the paper feeding tray different corresponding to the reading conditions of the manuscripts.
