An optical disk device which uses address information to perform a checking process on an optical disk. In an HD-DVD optical disk, data is recorded in both grooves and lands. A groove (G) track address system which is exclusively used for a groove is formed in a groove track and a land (L) track address system which is exclusively used for a land is formed in a land track. When the address of a target groove track is determinate and fixed to n, the optical disk device reads address information of the L track address system in the groove track and determines whether or not the address which is read corresponds to n or n-1. When the address which is read corresponds to n or n-1, the optical disk is determined to be normal. When the address which is read does not correspond to n or n-1, it is determined that the optical disk is defective.
