The invention provides a pre-whirl generator for generating whirl in a gas flow for a gas compressor, the generator comprising: first and second substantially co-axial gas conduits each for providing a passage for gas into a compressor; a vane provided in at least one of the gas conduits for imparting whirl to a gas flow through said at least one of the gas conduits the vane being provided in a region where said first and second gas paths are separate; and a flow valve arranged in at least one of the gas conduits for controlling the flow through said at least one of the gas conduits thereby providing control of the whirl of the gas flow for the gas compressor.
