The invention relates to a method for analyzing and evaluating a signal, especially a sensor signal. The signal is processed by way of orthogonal decomposition to low order base functions or by way of a method equivalent thereto, thereby obtaining criteria for the evaluation of the signal. This type of decomposition requires little compute time and is therefore inexpensive to implement, for example in a control device for a passenger protection system of a vehicle for influencing the trigger criteria or minimum triggering levels.
