Methods and System for Color Recognition and Enhancing Monochrome Image Recognition. The invention is a color recognition algorithm applied through a machine vision system which takes different shots of the object inspected at different intensity level until the needed average hue Hsub(avg) or Hsub(avg(m)) or Hsub(avg(n)) is or are derived, regardless of the number of shots captured. A representative hue Hsub(rep) is derived from these average hue and used for comparison with preset hue values Hsub(preset(n)) in a hue table. When the representative hue value matches a particular preset hue value at or above prescribed level of confidence, the color of the object is identified. Its output that is the identified color may be converted to wavelength for the convenience of its operator. Otherwise, it may be feedback to a process or control loop. It may also be used with other image processing and analysis 15 methods on the machine vision system itself to perform other tasks. The algorithm can, also be modified for identifying objects in monochrome images before the images are subjected to subsequent image processing and analysis.
