PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an optical source, capable of generating an output beam which can quickly and continuously sweep over a prescribed frequency range, without mode hoppings. SOLUTION: In one embodiment, the wavelength variable optical source (10) includes a resonance optical path, an optical gain medium (18), an optical diffraction grating (20), and first/second acoustooptical deflectors (24), (26). In another embodiment, the optical source has a resonance optical path, including first/second acoustooptical devices (24, 26) for tuning an output optical beam having an output wavelength profile over a prescribed frequency range. The first acousto-optical device (24) is driven by a first signal having a first time-varying frequency profile. The second acousto-optical device (26) is driven by a second signal having a second time-varying frequency profile. In this case, the second time-varying frequency profile differs from the first time-varying frequency profile by an amount substantially proportional to the time rate of change of the output wavelength profile.
