PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress reduction of characteristic of a hydraulic auto tensioner by preventing adsorption of a check ball due to wear of a seat face. SOLUTION: A passage 12 communicating both of a pressure chamber 10 and a reservoir chamber 11 is provided in a plunger 9 for partitioning the inside of a cylinder 1 into the pressure chamber 10 and the reservoir chamber 11, and the check ball 15 is provided for the seat face 14 formed in the passage 12 so as to come into contact and leave freely. Surface coarseness of the seat face 14 exceeds a limit value of wear amount for adsorbing and holding the check ball 15 on the seat face 14. The seat face 14 is worn by collision of the check ball 15, and a minute recessed part is left on the seat face 14 in a condition in which it reaches wear limit by progress of wear to prevent the check ball 15 from being adsorbed and held on the seat face 14.
