PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system for an internal combustion engine capable of making greater adjustment of valve closing timing than valve opening time while adjusting a valve lift amount and a valve open period with relatively simple constitution. SOLUTION: A rocker arm mechanism 19 for opening/closing a valve 5 has a first arm 25 swingingly supported to a rocker shaft 11; a second arm 35 driven by a cam 15 to swing around the rocker shaft side used as a fulcrum; a third arm 45 swingingly provided at a supporting shaft 13 disposed near the rocker shaft, and adjusting the phase of the cam by an attitude change caused by the fulcrum movement of the second arm, to drive the first arm; and a variable mechanism 44 for displacing the fulcrum of the second arm. The phase of the cam is adjusted by a single rocker arm mechanism, and the second arm is constantly energized to the cam side by a spring member 61 through the third arm. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
