An image display element comprising a multilayer film optical filter where layers of two or more kinds of materials reflecting or transmitting light of a specified color and having different refractive indexes are laid alternately in layers and shaped like fine particles. The multilayer film optical filter is a non-light-absorbing interference color filter reflecting light of a specified color and transmitting its complementary color. The multilayer film optical filter may be a dielectric multilayer film, a multilayer film of a transparent resin or a multilayer film of glass.
