PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small information recording cartridge which can perform large capacity information recording and with short access time and a recording and reproducing method using the same. SOLUTION: The recording and reproducing method of the information for recording or reproducing information using light to the information recording cartridge having a plurality of information recording disks attached coaxially to a rotation axis and movably in an axis direction of the rotation axis, discriminates a first information recording disk for recording or reproducing the information, then, extends an interval between the first information recording disk and a second information recording disk provided on one side of the first information recording disk in the rotation axis direction and records or reproduces the information in the first information recording disk by inserting a recording and reproducing head into a space between the extended space between the first information recording disk and the second information recording disk.
