PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce noise and extend a life of a printing head carried in a serial printer, particularly a wire dot printer. SOLUTION: The serial printer has tip parts of printing wires arranged approximately in a circle around a rotation center C of the printing head. At a first position of the printing head, a high-speed printing arrangement is configured in which every two tip parts of the printing wires are positioned on each of virtual lines L<SB>1</SB>set at equal intervals by a pitch of N to a direction parallel to a movement direction of the printing head, and moreover to a direction orthogonal to the movement direction of the printing head. At a second position of the printing head, a high-density printing arrangement is configured in which every one tip part of the printing wire is positioned on each of virtual lines L<SB>2</SB>set at equal intervals by a pitch of N/2 to the direction parallel to the movement direction L<SB>0</SB>of the printing head, and moreover to the direction orthogonal to the movement direction of the printing head. The arrangement of the tip parts of the printing wires is switched to the high-speed printing arrangement and to the high-density printing arrangement by rotating the printing head by a rotary driving means.
