<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation plate which contribute to improvement in the display characteristics of an image display apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The retardation plate comprises at least one kind of alignment film on a transparent support body, a layer of a rod-shaped liquid crystalline composition thereon and further an optical anisotropic layer, originating from a discotic liquid crystalline composition thereon.
