PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic onomatopoeic word caption producing device simplified so that the hearing-impaired can easily recognize a background sound. SOLUTION: An onomatopoeic word caption producing device which inputs voice of a program and data concerning the program, and which produces an onomatopoeic word of a background sound extracted from the voice includes a storing portion 10 for storing an onomatopoeic word database preliminarily associating data information indicating an onomatopoeic word and a background sound with key information designating a program content mutually; a background voice extractor 8 for extracting a background sound from a voice; an acoustic information extractor 9 for extracting the data information indicating the background voice from the background sound; a program information extractor 12 for extracting the key information designating the program content from data concerning the program; and a retrieving portion 11 for comparing the key information designating the program content and the data information indicating the background sound with the onomatopoeic word database stored in the storing portion 10 and retrieving the onomatopoeic word to be outputted.
