PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To create accurate shading compensation data eliminating difference between illumination distribution (light distribution characteristic) of an irradiation light from a light source for reading in a reading plane, and illumination distribution (light distribution characteristic) in a reference plane. SOLUTION: The image scanner is characterized to be provided with a correction means which arranges two reference planes at a focused position of an optical system of a reading unit and at an out-of-focus position, corrects data read from the two reference planes, and creates respective correction data; a determination means which determines whether dust adheres or not based on data read from the two reference plane; and an creation means which creates the shading correction data based on the data read from the reference plane of the focused position when it is determined that the dust does not adhere, and creates the shading correction data based on the correction data read from the reference plane of the out-of-focus position and the correction data created in the correction means when it is determined that the dust adheres.
