PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize satisfactory color reproducibility without using an IRCF and improve an S/N ratio in an image pickup device. SOLUTION: Matrix arithmetic operation is performed including multiplying first color signals R5, G5 and B5 corresponding to an incident light, a color signal almost equal to a value acquired by exponentiating the first color signal by a first constant i as an exponent and having a limited gain in a range of small input levels, and a color signal of a value approximated to a value acquired by exponentiating the first color signal by a second constant j as an exponent. Further, these signals are multiplied with a matrix coefficient, thereby acquiring second color signals R6, G6 and B6. The first and second constants and the matrix coefficient are decided so that the total characteristics of a color signal generating means 20 and a spectrum sensitivity characteristic correcting means 6 may be similar to color vision characteristic of a human being or spectrum sensitivity characteristic acquired by linearly converting the color vision characteristic.
