<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalytic converter for exhaust gas cleaning which is composed of a catalyst layer containing an alkali metal component and a metal honeycomb substrate and exhibits improved durability in a high-temperature exhaust gas; and a method for determining the concentration of aluminum contained in a stainless foil. <P>SOLUTION: The catalytic converter for exhaust gas cleaning is composed of a honeycomb substrate prepared by processing a 20-35 μm thick stainless foil and a catalyst layer, as an occludent or adsorbent, containing an alkali metal component in an amount of 0.01-0.5 mol per m<SP>2</SP>of surface area of the stainless foil. The concentration ρ (mass%) of Al in the stainless foil satisfies the condition represented by formula (I): 12≥ρ≥(363×a<SP>2</SP>+1.29×a+180)/t (wherein t is the thickness of the stainless foil; and a is the concentration (mol/m<SP>2</SP>) of the alkali metal component).
