PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the utility efficiency of light in a composition in which some regions of a liquid crystal panel is selectively irradiated with light or a region irradiated with light is moved stepwise according to the period of the vertical scanning signal of the liquid crystal. SOLUTION: A display device includes a lighting system 10A which has: an optical waveguide plate 38 for introducing light thereinto; a drive part 36 having a planar array of actuators 34 disposed in facing relation to the optical waveguide plate 38; a displacement transmission part 39 disposed between the optical waveguide plate 38 and the drive part 36; and a light scattering layer 80 disposed on the displacement transmission part 39, and which controls light that leaks from the optical waveguide plate 38 as emitted light, by selective contact/separation of the light scattering layer 80 with/from the optical waveguide plate 38 caused by the drive part 36. The display device also includes a liquid crystal panel 12 for modulating the emitted light from the lighting system 10A to display an image. The lighting system 10A has a light reflecting layer 300 disposed on at least a portion of the displacement transmission part 39 that confronts the optical waveguide plate 38.
