PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control a pretilt angle of a liquid crystal molecule in relation to a liquid crystal element of which the light transmittance and the light reflectance are electrically controlled. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal element has a pair of substrates 1, 8, a liquid crystal layer 4 interposed between the pair of substrates 1, 8 and a pair of alignment layers 3, 5 respectively formed on the liquid crystal layer 4 sides of the pair of substrates 1, 8 so as to align the liquid crystal molecules 10 in the liquid crystal layer 4. At least one alignment layer 5 out of the pair of alignment layers 3, 5 has holes 9 extending in a direction inclined with respect to a surface of the substrate 8. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
