The door arrester for the door of a vehicle comprises a housing fastened on either the door or door frame, a retaining rod passing through an opening (3) in the housing and pivotably installed on either the door frame or door, and at least one braking component (9a,9b) spring-loaded in the direction of the retaining rod. The first arm (19a,19b) of a lever (18a,18b) is allocated to the braking component, and the second arm (20a,20b) of the lever is allocated to the spring (23). The braking component can be constructed together with the first lever arm. An independent claim is included for a method for the attaching of a door arrester on a motor vehicle in which the pretensioning of the braking component is transmitted through a lever, and for introducing the retaining rod through a lever section protruding outside the housing the pretensioning is relaxed.
