PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system for an internal combustion engine capable of adjusting the phases of a plurality of valves while preventing the occurrence of unbalanced load with compact structure. SOLUTION: In this variable valve system, a rocker arm mechanism 19 for opening/closing the valve 5 has a first arm 25 swingingly supported to a rocker shaft 11; a second arm 35 driven by a cam 15 to swing around the rocker shaft side used as a fulcrum; a third arm 45 swingingly provided at a supporting shaft 13 disposed near the rocker shaft, to adjust the phase of the cam by an attitude change caused by the fulcrum movement of the second arm, to drive the first arm; and a variable mechanism 44 for displacing the fulcrum of the second arm. The first arm is constituted to have a first wall part 29 and a second wall part 29 arranged in the axial direction of the rocker shaft, and the second arm and the third arm are interposed between the first wall part and the second wall part.
