PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing scale-like metal flake free of curling and having a high aspect ratio as well, and to provide scale-like metal flake. SOLUTION: The method for producing scale-like metal flake comprises: a stacking stage where the surface of a resin film is at least stacked with a strippable layer and a metallic layer composed of a metallic simple substance or an alloy to obtain a stacked film; a stripping stage where, after the stacking stage, the metallic layer is stripped from the stacked film; and a pulverizing stage where, after the stripping stage, the metal layer is finely pulverized. The stacking stage is performed by a vacuum deposition method, the degree of the vacuum at this time is≤1.0×10<SP>-1</SP>Pa, and gaseous argon is introduced at the time when the vacuum deposition is performed.
