A piston engine has a crankshaft that may be raised or lowered by hydraulic pistons located in a horizontal plane that impart a force on the inclined faces of the bearing shells, lifting the shells. The crankshaft position is monitored by electromagnetic valves. The crankshaft vertical shift output is compensated by gear wheels.
