PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner with a pole ratchet mechanism having backlash and capable of preventing a pole coil spring from obstructing movement of a pole. SOLUTION: This hydraulic tensioner is provided with a piston 3 inserted slidably into a piston hole 2a of a housing 2 and provided with a rack tooth 3b in a part of the outer periphery, the pole 5 having a tooth part 5a engaging with the rack tooth 3b of the piston 3 on a lower face so as to allow travel of the piston 3 in the direction of protrusion and regulate travel in the direction of retraction, a pole hole 2b having a clearance allowing travel in the forward and backward directions of the pole 5 between front and rear end faces of the pole 5 to store the pole 5, and the pole coil spring 6 stored in a pole spring storage part 24 and pressing the pole 5 against a side where a tooth part 5b of the pole 5 is engaged with the rack tooth 3b of the piston 3.
