PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing control device for an internal combustion engine, securing good sliding performance of a hydraulic control valve while suppressing the deposition/accumulation of impurities or foreign matters in the hydraulic control valve. SOLUTION: A control signal calculation part 102 calculates a feedback control signal for making an actual valve timing correspond to a target valve timing, and an output current calculation part 105 converts the feedback control signal into an output current for driving the hydraulic control valve 30 to control the valve timing. At this time, when the condition of throttling the hydraulic control valve 30 at a preset opening or smaller is kept on for a preset time or longer, cleaning conditions are established. Then, a cleaning condition determination part 104 outputs a cleaning request to the output current calculation part 105 to force the hydraulic control valve 30 to be opened/closed. Thus, the amount of oil flowing in the hydraulic control valve 30 is temporarily increased and deposited/accumulated matters in the hydraulic control valve 30 are discharged to the outside of the hydraulic control valve 30 to clean up the hydraulic control valve 30.
