PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a slab having reduced surface cracks in which surface cracks, particularly, intergranular cracks can be prevented at the time of producing steel by continuous casting. SOLUTION: The cast slab in which surface cracks are less liable to be generated comprises, as a cast slab free from intergranular cracks, by mass, 0.05 to 0.5% P and 0.005 to 0.5% of one or more kinds selected from Ce and La at the time of producing carbon steel comprising specified amounts of C, Mn, Si, S, N, O and Al, and also comprising at least one or more kinds selected from Nb, Ti, V and N by continuous casting.
