PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact ice making apparatus for making irregular shapes of ice used for a whisky diluted with water or the like. SOLUTION: This ice making apparatus is provided with an ice crusher provided with an ice making container 73 for making sheetlike ice, a turnable shaft 78 inserted into a prescribed depth substantially vertically from one face of the ice, and a drive unit for driving a gear unit 80 connected to the shaft 78 by a motor 82, and a detecting means 83 for detecting a rotation condition of the shaft 78. The shaft 78 is rotated to crush the sheetlike ice into the plurality of irregular-shaped ices, and the presence of uncrushed ice is detected indirectly to enhance reliability of the ice making apparatus.
