PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner that increases energy efficiency in both cooling and heating operations. SOLUTION: The air conditioner has a refrigeration cycle formed by a compressor 1, a heat exchanger (not shown), a blower (not shown) and a diaphragm device (not shown), and has a pump 3 communicating with a hollow layer 2 formed in a shell 1a of the compressor 1. In a heating operation, the pump 3 can decompress air in the hollow layer 2 to develop a heat insulating effect of the hollow layer 2 and prevent heat radiation from the compressor 1, which leads to increased energy efficiency in the heating operation. In a cooling operation, the pump 3 can be stopped to allow natural induction of air into the hollow layer 2, disable a heat insulating effect of the hollow layer 2 and thus promote heat radiation from the compressor 1, which leads to increased energy efficiency in the cooling operation.
