<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image compressing method which can improve the compression ratio and avoid deterioration of the quality of an image by subjecting the gradation image to variable length coding utilizing a differential system. <P>SOLUTION: In the color image compressing method, the gradation color image is divided into brains for R, G and B, a primary difference for element data in each brain is calculated, and a secondary difference to the primary difference is calculated to thereby subject each brain to the variable length coding. When the secondary difference is not zero, each brain is subjected to the variable length coding.
