The method involves operating a burner with first and second fuel supplies for first (6) and second (8) groups of fuel outlets arranged in the direction of the burner axis to supply first and second amounts of the same premix fuel to a swirl chamber. Fuel can be fed to the two fuel supplies independently from each other. The fuel supplies for the two groups of fuel outlets can be controlled or regulated separately. An independent claim is included for a burner with stepped premix gas injection.
