The machine comprises a frame (1, 3, 4) supporting a number of separate cutting and transport units (19) extending transverse to the machine direction, each unit comprising an upper part (23), a lower part (24), a conveyor device (21) for transporting the timber (15) in between the upper and lower parts and a device (20) for cutting the passing timber. The conveyor device comprises two endless conveyors extending parallel to each other and located one above the other. The first conveyor (35) is driven by a rotary force and supported by the upper part of the unit and the second conveyor (36) is also driven by a rotary force and supported by the lower part of the unit. The conveyors are located to the side of the cutting device and at least one conveyor comprises an elastomeric material for improved frictional grip with the timber. Pieces of timber are transported at right angles to their length direction.
