Preparation of acyl cyanides, useful for producing herbicides, by reacting hydrogen cyanide with formyl or tertiary amine group polymer and then with acyl halide

Preparing an intermediate product by reacting liquid hydrogen cyanide with a polymer or monomer possessing at least one formyl or tertiary amine functional group is reacted with an acyl halide, is new. Preparing acyl cyanides comprises: (a) reacting liquid hydrogen cyanide at 0-80 [deg]C with a polymer or monomer possessing at least one formyl functional group or at least one tertiary amine functional group, dissolved or mixed in a solvent; and (b) reacting the resulting intermediate product with an acyl halide to form the corresponding acyl cyanide and the regenerated or modified polymer. An independent claim is also included for the intermediate product.
