PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus whereby the sharpness of an image acquired from a read object and the reliability of the image can considerably be enhanced. SOLUTION: A camera is used to read a plurality of black reference marks respectively provided to both sides of a read window, the reference marks and parts of the background of the reference marks are expressed in a form of histogram, the histogrammed value is compared with a reference value, and the gain of the camera is controlled on the basis of a result of the comparison.
