PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which can surely detect the presence or absence of sheets in a sheet transfer path without the number of sheet detectors set inside the printer being increased, and to provide a sheet presence or absence confirmation method. SOLUTION: A combination processing apparatus 1 uses a second image read sensor 12 as the sheet detector in addition to the sheet detectors 9, 10, 26 and 28. The presence or absence of sheets in a first transfer path P1 is detected by these five sheet detectors, and it is made sure that no sheet is present in the first transfer path P1 before a necessary process is carried out.
