<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a method of focusing the present fingerprint sensor wherein generally it is slow, and it is difficult to quickly and accurately bring the fingerprint image into focus. <P>SOLUTION: In focus adjusting method of bringing the fingerprint image into focus, a partial fingerprint image is obtained, a control parameter value is adjusted to obtain a focused partial fingerprint image, and after the adjusted control parameter value is set as a focus control parameter value, the focused whole fingerprint image is obtained. Further, A fingerprint detecting apparatus capable of partially reading the fingerprint image includes a sensor array composed of a plurality of detecting elements to detect the ridges and troughs of the fingerprint placed on a contact surface.
